Title: juggling manticores
'Verse/characters: Sun Queen era; Ian Sansoucy, two other Hands
Prompt: M: "(yes, there is a pattern here, hush)" and Dormouse: "that anonymous Hand of whom I am so fond" (who is much less anonymous once he coughed up his name)
Word Count: 805
Notes: Ian Sansoucy has appeared in gooood morning, your majesty, family history, and Leaves. Nature's way of laughing at you, among others. These are first appearances for his fellow Hands Petra Royale (a King's Hand) and Pierre Cassian (one of Iarlaith's).
Apparently there was a third colour coding for Hands, back in the day. I knew about the red cords for Aifiric's Hands via Aodh, and the grey for Iarlaith's via Alaia Kloeten, who's made a thus-far cameo appearance at the beginning of Some Kind of Love Song.

Title: unexpected
'Verse/characters: Falcons' Feathers Part 1-B; Irina
Prompt: 58F "puzzle"
Word Count: 1588
Notes: Follows unwelcome; most of this appeared in the spark A horse, a rider, and a clever jeweler.
This is pretty choppy, and I'm rusty as hell, so this is in part a post-of-intent. Note to self: Radish's "just a trinket, nothing more" and M's "the overwhelming feeling that it's all pointless" and "when one really ought to be triumphant, but is too tired" sparks for when I come back to this.

Prompt: 92f "dust"
Word Count: 4575
Notes: a draft of a portion of this was posted as old feuds . . two years ago. Oy.
Almost every place name is obviously subject to change, though Jean-Baptiste is strangely specific about being from Villar d'Arène.
I'm sure the next draft of this will be even longer. Second part to follow once monsieur Pellisser is willing to speak to me again (hence his portion being significantly shorter than his co-star's).

Title: yelling's done: time to sing
'Verse/characters: Trickwood Unification (River Barons); Ilne, a sergeant whose name I don't know yet
Prompt: 72F "victory"
Word Count: 1703
Notes: Follows waiting for the yelling to stop (which was originally written in 2009 and tweaked a bit with the context from this one. Biggest jigsaw puzzle, or biggest jigsaw puzzle?); apparently this is Väinä they're tackling. Good to know. I think it's a fortified trading post, not a barony as such, near Ilmatar Ridge.
We're before Baron Black Rocks invites several of his rivals into his spider's den, but in the lead-up to it.
Because there is always more context. Stupid, stupid fractal story. Argh.

Prompt: 41F "dawn"
Word Count: 2009
Notes: and on a rather more upbeat note, guess who gets to meet the Trickwood in full-on spring?
Yeah, that's right.
This is after Ruadhan and Donel have spent their first winter in the Trickwood (they weren't thrilled), and before the incidents with the river barons start happening.

Title: going down the checklist
'Verse/characters: Sibir; Stas, Sergeievich, various others
Prompt: 17F: "experience"
Word Count: 1110
Notes: billradish asked for "something with Stas early in his association with Sergeieivich" when I couldn't manage the late-stages expansion she'd originally asked for.
Previous lievtenants under Sergeievich's command have been mentioned in middle management sucks; this is obviously after new arrival, following relatively closely, and is before new command, new responsibilities.
Vocab: a zastava is a mobile outpost that acts sort of like an aircraft carrier. A Rotmistr is a captain (generally of cavalry); an artel is a unit, as is a druzhina but a druzhina is used in the sense of 'so-and-so's unit/command' instead of the more general artel.

Ulysse located Hernén (and started building this harbour) in unexpected company, and brought Geoffrey out to join Hernén in lifeline.

Stitching together four pieces, written in '06, early '09, and late '09, and all of 'em in different tones? Cussworthy. 'Verse/characters: Sibir; Ruslan Sergeievich, a sergeant, a lev
Prompt: 82D "addition"
Word Count: 1819
Notes: After bare shoulders and suns, before new arrival.
So far as I can currently determine (and lord knows this is subject to revision with future research), there's approximately two sergeants to a lievtenant, and three to four levs to a captain. A captain can either be infantry or cavalry, and depending on the situation and the rate of attrition his levs will be split as to whether they are infantry or cavalry. So a cavalry captain might have only riders in his druzhina, and an infantry captain might have only infantry in his, or they might be mixed with riders providing transportation for an infantry captain's soldiers or soldiers acting as gunners etc for a cavalry captain.
This is after Sergeievich is promoted to captain; yesterday's post he was a lievtenant.
